Frequently Asked Questions - Gear and Clothing

What gear do I need?
A gear list is available from the Resource Centre. The list will be periodically updated. Be sure that you're using the current version.

What is the difference between a field uniform and a class A uniform?
The field uniform is the name of the uniform that includes the Scout shirt, Scout pants or shorts, Scout belt, and Scout socks. This is sometimes referred to as a “class A uniform”; however, that is an official BSA term.

What qualifies as a “Scout T-shirt?”
This could include T-shirts from the following: troop, Scout camp, BSA High Adventure Base (Philmont, etc.), Order of the Arrow, camporee or other Scouting event, Scout Jamboree, or just a generic BSA T-shirt.

Do the white socks with red and green stripes sold at the Scout Shop qualify as Scout socks for uniform wear?
These socks are for the activity uniform. When wearing the field uniform, you must wear the olive socks – ankle, crew, or knee – with the red top.

I saw some shorts at a clothing store that look exactly like BSA shorts. Can I substitute them for BSA shorts?
No – only official BSA shorts and/or long pants may be worn.

Do you recommend the BSA “switchback” pants?
Yes – this is your best option. They easily convert between shorts and long pants, plus they have a build-in belt so you don’t have to bring one. In addition, they dry quickly after washing.

I’m in a Venturing crew. If I wear my Venturing shirt, what pants and socks do I wear?
With the green Venturing shirts, you must wear the official BSA gray Venturing shorts or pants and the gray Venturing socks. If you are also registered in a Scout troop, a better option might be to just go with a Boy Scout uniform.

Will I have a chance to wear non-Scout clothes?
The only time you will wear non-Scout clothes is on the day when we do our service project. Please do not bring any non-Scout clothes, other than your work clothes for the service project.

Should I take the Jamboree poncho or a rain jacket?
Our recommendation is to take a rain jacket, and leave the poncho at home. A rain jacket is much more versatile – it keeps you dry better than a poncho, plus you can use it as a regular jacket at other times.

Frequently Asked Questions - General

Is it too late to register for the Jamboree?
As of May 1, there is one opening in Troop 202. It may be too late to be added to the troop, but if you are interested in attending, please contact Hudson Lockett.

How are the Jamboree troops organized?
Troops consist of 40 people - 36 Scouts and 4 adult leaders. Of the Scouts, 4 serve as youth leaders: Senior Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Scribe, and Quartermaster. The remaining 32 Scouts are divided into 4 patrols of 8 Scouts each. Each patrol will have a Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, and other leadership positions as determined by the patrol.

Is the shakedown weekend really mandatory?
Yes, it is REQUIRED that you attend.

Where can I get information about obtaining a passport?
Passport information is available from the following Web site: http://travel.state.gov

Will I have to have a physical exam?
Yes. You'll need to use the official World Jamboree medical form that can be downloaded from the Resource Centre. The completed form will need to be turned in at the shakedown weekend.

What will the weather be like in England during the Jamboree?
The average high is 73 degrees; the average low is 54 degrees. These are averages, so it could be warmer or cooler. Rain is always a possibility.

What is the time difference between Dallas and London?
There's a six-hour time difference. When it's 8:00 am in Dallas, it's 2:00 pm in London.

Can parents visit the Jamboree?
Yes, you can buy a one-day tour ticket on-line to visit the Jamboree by clicking here. The Jamboree organizers request that visitors buy tickets for only one day. The tour is exactly the same every day so there is no advantage to visiting more than once.

If you visit the Jamboree, it is important to be aware of the following:
(a) The tour only allows visitors (in a group with a guide) to see the "public" areas of the Jamboree site.
(b) There is no access to the camping areas where the Scouts will be staying.
(c) Scouts will be doing off-site activities three days during the Jamboree. We will not know when we will be off-site until we arrive at the Jamboree next August. It is thus possible that your son will be gone on the day that you visit.
(d) On other days, he could be involved in activities in an area of the Jamboree site not accessible on the tour.
(e) In summary, you are welcome to visit the Jamboree, but you might not be able to see your son while you are there.
